When I was your son's age I wanted my hair cut exactly like that too!
My mom wouldn't let me do it. I think you're awesome that you let him!
MT wanted her's done that way too. I did talk her out of it and she moved on.
Unfortunately, she has a very lumpy head and would look terrible with shaved hair so I try to get her to like the other hair style. If she really insisted, I'd let her do though, because it is just hair and it would grow back and be fine. :)
